HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – BRICKS AND MORTAR ($7.60) drew away in the final furlong under Irad Ortiz Jr. to win the inaugural running of the $7 million Pegasus World Cup Turf over a rain-soaked turf course Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Chad Brown for Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence, Bricks and Mortar got a good mid-pack trip before roaring to command, winning by 2 1/2 lengths over the Coolmore filly, MAGIC WAND. DELTA PRINCE was third and CATAPULT was fourth in a field of 10. The full order was 7-1-8-9.
Bricks and Mortar, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Giant’s Causeway, finished 1 3/16 miles in 1:54.59.
The victory capped a huge week for Ortiz and Brown, as they were honored with 2018 Eclipse Awards here Thursday night as outstanding jockey and trainer, respectively.
Mike Welsch will have the full Pegasus Turf recap up before long on www.drf.com.
