City of Light saved his best for last turning in a career defining performance, a 5 3/4 length victory over Seeking the Soul, in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Breeders' Cup Classic and Eclipse Award winner Accelerate finished another 1 1/2 lengths further back in third as the 3-2 favorite.
City of Light, the winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, was the only horse to defeat Accelerate in 2018. Both horses will depart together on Sunday to begin their breeding careers next month at Lanes End Farm.
City of Light broke alertly under jockey Javier Castellano then was reserved off the early pace of Patternrecognition. City of Light readily took control down the backstretch, repulsed a bid from Accelerate into the stretch and drew off with complete authority in the final furlong. Seeking the Soul rallied belateldy to over-take a tiring Accelerate to finish second at odds of 30-1 while never a threat to the winner.
Bravazo finished fourth followed in order by Audible, Gunnevera, True Timber, Imperative, Tom's d'Etat, Something Awesome, Kukulkan and Patternrecognition.
City of Light, a 5-year-old son of City of Light who had never raced on a wet track prior to the Pegasus World Cup, earned the $4 million winner's share of the purse. Trained by Michael McCarthy for Mr. and Mrs. William K Warren Jr., he completed a mile and one eighth over the sloppy track in 1:47.71 and returned $5.80
"He's a gift, amazing," McCarthy said after the race. "The fashion that he did it was just amazing today. I have $9 million reasons why I'm so emotional."
