Two horses threw their riders during an eventful first race today at Gulfstream, with apprentice ROMERO MARAGH appearing to suffer an unspecified injury prior to being transported to nearby Aventura Hospital for evaluation; we're still awaiting word on his status. The other jockey, CARLOS MONTALVO, incurred an injured right ankle that will require further evaluation.

The incident occurred at the quarter-pole on the turf course, where CLASSIC ACT, ridden by Maragh, appeared to clip heels with the eventual second-place finisher, DIXIE PRINCESS; in turn, PROSPECTIVE MOMENT could not avoid the fallen rider and threw Montalvo. Neither horse appeared to be seriously injured.

After a stewards' inquiry, Dixie Princess was disqualified and placed last. The winner of the one-mile race for N2L $16,000 claimers was COCKTAIL SKIRT ($3.60) for trainer Jane Cibelli and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. The official order was 5-4-6-9.

UPDATE as of 12:40 ET: Maragh was "alert" with what appeared to be an ice-pack on an ankle before leaving for the hospital, per track personnel. More definitive diagnoses for both riders to come.

2nd UPDATE as of 1:50: Maragh's uncle, trainer Aubrey Maragh, said the 18-year-old rider was in considerable pain in his back and was undergoing a CAT scan at the hospital. He also said Romero had been bleeding from his nose and mouth upon leaving the track. Aubrey Maragh, whose sister is Romero's mother, said he hoped to have an update later today or early tomorrow.

Montalvo is undergoing X-rays for a possible fracture or severe sprain of his right ankle at this time. He also may have injured one or both of his thumbs/hands when hitting the ground.
