The New York stewards suspended apprentice jockey Benjamin Hernandez 10 calendar days for failing to ride Friday's eighth race at Aqueduct in a professional manner.
Specifically, the stewards penalized Hernandez for "failure to protect the best interest of his mount by not dismounting and taking the weight off his horse in distress."
Hernandez was aboard Tiger Man, whom Hernandez pulled up inside the quarter pole. Hernandez did not dismount after pulling him up. Ultimately, Tiger Man was vanned off and was diagnosed with a sesamoid fracture in his left front leg and was euthanized Saturday morning.
Hernandez appealed the suspension and a stay has been granted.
Hernandez, a 7-pound apprentice, has won 12 races from 92 mounts and is eighth in the Aqueduct winter standings.
