Nine-race card Sunday at Santa Anita, dirt and turf conditions pending. Preview …
Race 1 – This N1X for 3yos remains on the hill, as of 9:50 a.m. Onthewaytonevrland (3) is the 2-1 favorite making his California debut following a modest maiden route win at Gulfstream Park. Vantastic (1) and Stubbins (4) already have won on the hill.
Race 2 – Program favorite Stringent (2) is fastest on figs, but this $16k claiming sprint is ripe for 4-1 closer Run Macho Run (1). A potentially lively pace flatters his style.
Race 3 – Bottom-level maiden-claiming races occasionally offer low-odds overlays. That is the case with Getaloadofthis (3), listed as 3-1 third choice in the program. He shortens to a sprint after setting a fast pace in a route. The rival that he dueled with and put away returned to win his next start, thereby flattering Getaloadofthis. Will settle for 2-1 odds.
Race 5 – This is the meet’s first five-furlong turf race. Comeback dropper Swirling (1) is favored in this $20k claiming race for fillies and mares. Her rider is 10-pound apprentice Jean C. Diaz, who scored his first local victory on Saturday. Diaz arrives from Puerto Rico with much potential.
Race 7 – Apache Princess (1) would be the meet’s first three-time winner if she takes the G3 Sweet Life for 3yo fillies on the hill. Both wins by Apache Princess, maiden and allowance, were on the hill. Her main rival is route-to-sprint program favorite Thriving (2), who was a sprinter in Europe and cutting back for her first sprint in the U.S.
Race 8 – What do you do with 6-5 favorite Coliseum (2)? Last out, he broke slowly and finished sixth in a G3 mile. The problem: slow starts have become a bad habit. In both gate works since raced, Coliseum broke slowly. With a clean start, he probably will win based on his debut romp two back. He might win even if he breaks slowly again. But at a seven-furlong distance recently kind to speed, Coliseum looks like an underlay. This G2 sprint for 3yos is ripe for Sparky Ville (4) or Savagery (5). Both are listed at 4-1.
Race 9 – Expect Fiery Lady (9) will be bet down from her 6-1 program odds. Her third last out in a $150k stakes for Cal-breds would be good enough to handle this N1X lineup.
First post Sunday is 12:30.
