While Overheated ($3) scored by 1 3/4 lengths in the Aqueduct opener for trainer Linda Rice and jockey Manny Franco, an odd spill took place at the back of the field.
About an eighth of a mile into the seven-furlong race for $20,000 maiden claimers, 60-1 Lia Shivani began racing erratically and bobbled near the back of the seven-horse field. Heman Harkie, a 10-pound apprentice, appeared to lose his balance and fell off. Lia Shivani, then made a beeline towards the outer rail.
Harkie, who has ridden at Aqueduct and Belmont since last June, left the course under his own power after the incident but did take off his other mount of the day in race 4. Harkie is now zero for 35 in his career.
Lia Shivani was caught and walked back to the barn of Oscar Barrera III.
