Laurel Park: Large, competitive fields in Barbara Fritchie, General George

The seven-furlong Barbara Fritchie and General George stakes, co-featured on Saturday's Winter Carnival card at Laurel Park, have drawn large, competitive fields. The Grade 3, $250,000 races are supported by three other stakes, the Miracle Wood and Wide Country for 3-year-olds and the John B. Campbell, a 1 1/8-mile race for 4-year-olds and up.

The Fritchie, for fillies and mares, has a field of 11 and offers the best matchup of the day. The top contenders - Late Night Pow Wow, Ms Locust Point, Dawn the Destroyer, and Spiced Perfection - all enter off victories.

Late Night Pow Wow is on an eight-race win streak, Ms Locust Point won this race a year ago, Dawn the Destroyer is coming off a win in the Interborough at Aqueduct, and Spiced Perfection will be making her debut for new connections after having been sold following her victory in the Grade 1 La Brea at Santa Anita.

Spiced Perfection will break from post 1 under Flavien Prat. She is now trained by Peter Miller. Starting just to her outside is Late Night Pow Wow, who is based at Charles Town with Javier Contreras and who will have regular rider Fredy Peltroche aboard.

Dawn the Destroyer drew post 4 for Kiaran McLaughlin. Junior Alvarado will be in to ride. Ms Locust Point is drawn better than her chief rivals in post 8. She is trained by John Servis, who has given the mount to Jorge Vargas Jr.

The field also includes Shimmering Aspen, post 2; Honor Way, post 5; My Cousin Martha, post 6; Devine Mischief, post 7; Timeless Curls, post 9; Your Love, post 10; and Lady Vicki, post 11.

The 14-horse General George is more wide-open than the Fritchie. Still Having Fun, Uncontested, Something Awesome, and Laki will be among the favorites but will need their best in order to succeed.

Still Having Fun, coming off a third-place finish to McKinzie in the Grade 1 Malibu, has post 6 for trainer Tim Keefe. Prat rides.

Uncontested, who trainer Jennifer Patterson shipped in from Kentucky to blow away an optional-claiming field at Laurel in December, will again be ridden by Trevor McCarthy. Uncontested drew post 3.

Something Awesome won this race a year ago for trainer Jose Corrales. He returns on three weeks' rest after finishing 10th in the Pegasus World Cup. Edgar Prado, who has been riding in Saudi Arabia, keeps the mount. Something Awesome will start from post 13.

Laki, who is trained by Damon Dilodovico, has post 7 and jockey Horacio Karamanos.

The others are Majestic Dunhill, post 1; Home Run Maker, post 2; Colonel Sharp, post 4; Moe Trouble, post 5; Life in Shambles, post 8; It's Good To Be Us, post 9; Do Share, post 10; Rockinn On Bye, post 11; Cordmaker, post 12; and Long May You Run, post 14.
