HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – X Y JET stamped his ticket to Dubai when cruising to a 7 3/4-length triumph in an otherwise ordinary allowance sprint Wednesday at rain-soaked Gulfstream Park.
Ridden by Emisael Jaramillo, X Y Jet broke sharply from his outside post in the six-furlong race, easily out-footing his five opponents to the turn and never being threatened thereafter. He paid $2.80 as the heavy favorite after finishing in 1:09.98 over a sea of slop. SANTIAMEN was a distant second.
Assuming X Y Jet exits the race in good order, he will race next in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 30 at Meydan. Trainer Jorge Navarro said after the Wednesday race that his main concern was that X Y Jet “tied up,” or suffered severe cramping, on Sunday, an episode that jeopardized his prep race, and, in turn, the trip to Dubai.
“We did not have to medicate him,” said Navarro. “We got very lucky. My veterinarians and my staff did a tremendous job with the horse.
“I’m very emotional about this because I thought we were going to have to scratch him.”
This was the second start following a nearly seven-month layoff for X Y Jet. In his Jan. 19 return in the Sunshine Millions Sprint, he was used up on a wicked pace and faded to fourth.
This will be the third time X Y Jet will race in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan. He finished second in a photo in both 2016 and 2018. Navarro said the horse will depart on or about March 20.
A gray 7-year-old by Kantharos, X Y Jet now has won 11 of 24 starts and earned nearly $1.6 million. The Florida-bred gelding is owned by Rockingham Ranch and Gelfenstein Farm.
