Trainer Ken McPeek's two Kentucky Derby hopefuls, Grade 2 winner Signalman and Holy Bull winner Harvey Wallbanger, were a contrast in styles working at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.
Signalman, idle since his victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 24, worked five furlongs in 1:00.01 shortly after the 7:30 renovation break, posting splits of 24.75 and 36.14 along the way before galloping out in 1:13.39. Harvey Wallbanger waited until after the 9:00 a.m. break to breeze an easy half-mile in 50.75 before pulling up five panels in 1:04.40.
McPeek said early this afternoon that as of today, he's leaning towards running Signalman in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth here on March 2 and training Harvey Wallbanger up to the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 30.
