Marley's Freedom won for the sixth time in her last seven starts on Saturday at Santa Anita when wearing down pacesetter Selcourt before going on to record a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Santa Monica, which drew an outstanding field of female sprinters.
Selcourt held second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Mopotism. Escape Clause was fourth and Paradise Woods last in the field of five.
Marley's Freedom was always just behind and outside of Selcourt, who led through fractions of 22.48 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.07 for the half. Marley's Freedom, under Drayden Van Dyke, reeled her in just after passing the furlong pole in 1:09.77 and was timed in 1:22.34 for seven furlongs on a track rated good.
Marley's Freedom has won five graded stakes during her 6 for 7 run, but that lone loss was incredibly costly. She was fourth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, and ended up finishing second in Eclipse Award voting in that division to the race winner, Shamrock Rose.
Bob Baffert trains Marley's Freedom for Cicero Farms. She has now won eight times in 15 starts. Marley's Freedom, 5, is a daughter of Blame. She was the 3-5 favorite on Saturday.
