We're three-quarters of the way through the 12-race Presidents Day card, and there have been 5 winning favorites from the first 9 races, along with a winning 7-5 second choice (in R2). And yet, on the other end of the odds spectrum, two winners were very difficult for most horseplayers to come up with: HARRYHEE (15-1) in the Trust Buster (R3) and VOW ME NOW (28-1) in the just-run Sage of Monticello (R9). Vow Me Now, with Julien Leparoux up, gave trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. a sweep of the 3yo turf races, with ITSMYLUCKYCHARM (2-1f) having won the Mrs. Presidentress (R7) for fillies.
As you could probably infer from the advance of these races in our Monday print editions, these starters are pretty entertaining as Claiming Crown knock-offs, with the added twist of all of them honoring the nicknames of various late Presidents and First Ladies. There's a lively holiday crowd enjoying their holiday Monday today at Gulfstream, and you'd have to guess that this is probably a tradition that will continue in the coming years.
