In what is expected to be a prep race for his graded stakes debut, Galilean was unchallenged in Monday's $200,000 California Cup Derby for state-breds, pulling clear from four rivals to win by 4 1-2 lengths.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Galilean was three-wide in third-place behind pacesetter Loud Mouth, who set fractions of 23.95 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.85 for a half-mile. Galilean took the lead in early stretch and rapidly put distance on his rivals.
Galilean ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.43.
Feeling Strong (25-1) finished second, 10 lengths ahead of Whooping Jay, who as followed by Irish Heatwave and Loud Mouth in the small field.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Galilean, by Uncle Mo, has won 3 of 4 starts. The Cal Cup Derby was his 3-year-old debut and first start since a win in the King Glorious Stakes at a mile for state-breds at Los Alamitos on Dec. 16.
