HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – In easily the biggest upset so far today, 51-1 shot JELTRIN was up in the final yards Saturday to narrowly prevail over COOKIE DOUGH, with 1-5 favorite JAYWALK fading to fourth in the 31st running of the Grade 2, $200,000 Davona Dale Stakes at Gulfstream.
Jeltrin, with replacement rider Luis Saez aboard for trainer Alexis Delgado, finished the one-mile distance in 1:36.83 over a fast track.
With the victory, Jeltrin, a Tapizar filly, earned 50 qualifying points toward the May 3 Kentucky Oaks.
Jaywalk, making her first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in November, had no apparent mishap, giving closest chase to Cookie Dough to the quarter-pole before faltering. Cookie Dough had the lead until the final yards, when Jeltrin went past. CHAMPAGNE ANYONE was third.
Big show bets on the favorite led to big show payoffs on the fillies who finished ahead of her, with the respective $2 show prices for the top 3 finishers being $34, $22.60, and $15.40.
The $2 exacta (4-2) paid $1,025.40, the $1 trifecta (4-2-5) returned $2,013.40, and the 10-cent superfecta (4-2-5-1) was worth $403.94.
Mike Welsch will have the full Davona Dale recap up before long on www.drf.com.
Up next is the main event, the G2 Fountain of Youth for Kentucky Derby hopefuls. Post time is set for about 5:40 ET.
