There was a strong sense that Jaywalk, last year's champion 2-year-old filly, was not fully cranked for the just-completed Davona Dale Stakes in what was her first start since her dominating victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. However, even those who were prepared to be underwhelmed by Jaywalk couldn't have been prepared for what she did.
In fact, Jaywalk did nothing. After prompting an unremarkable pace, she dropped anchor even before turning for home and wound up a badly beaten fourth of seven in the worst finish of her otherwise stellar career.
Obviously, the Kentucky Oaks picture has suddenly been radically changed, with Jaywalk's previous air of superiority being seriously shattered. And unless a tangible excuse for Jaywalk's no show today appears in the near future, she will have some work to do before she erases the bad taste left by her Davona Dale outing.
