Code of Honor, a disappointing and well beaten fourth as the 4-5 favorite in his 3-year-old debut two months earlier in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, bounced back in impressive fashion rallying to a 3/4 length victory over the late running Bourbon War in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth. Vekoma finished third with the 6-5 favorite Hidden Scroll a tiring fourth after setting a contested and suicidal early pace.
Code of Honor benefitted from the pace scenario which saw the 99-1 Gladiator King press the previously undefeated Hidden Scroll through early splits 22,80 and 45.69 for the opening half-mile. Jockey John Velazquez bided his time aboard Code of Honor who advanced steadily to overtake the tiring Hidden Scroll nearing mid-stretch, edged clear then withstood a late run from Bourbon War. The latter also rated well off the early leaders, angled wide while rallying into the stretch, finishing with good energy and was second best.
Code of Honor, a 3-year-old homebred son of Noble Mission owned by William S. Farish and trained by Shug McGaughey, finished second last fall in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park but was scratched from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile after contracting a fever the day before the race. He completed a mile and one sixteenth in 1:43.85 over a fast track and paid $21.00.
