Five Star General blew out three furlongs in 35 4/5 seconds Tuesday at Tampa Bay Downs in preparation for Saturday's Grade 3 Jeff Ruby at Turfway Park.
"He was supposed to do it yesterday but we had a bad storm and the track wasn’t great," trainer Arnaud Delacour said from Florida.
Five Star General is one of about 10-12 3-year-olds expected to be entered Wednesday for the Jeff Ruby, a 1 1/8-mile race on Polytrack the provides 20 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby. A son of Distorted Humor, he is owned by many of the same principals associated with 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify - China Horse Club, WinStar Farm, and SF Racing.
A two-time winner as a juvenile, including the off-the-turf Central Park Stakes at Aqueduct, he finished sixth in his lone start at 3 when racing in the Grade 3 Sam. F. Davis at Tampa Feb. 9. He had a troubled trip in that race, getting steadied at a couple of key stages.
