Flavien Prat has chosen to ride Cal Cup Derby winner Galilean in the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 16, his agent, Derek Lawson, said Tuesday morning.
Prat also has been riding another Rebel contender based in Southern California, the Richard Mandella-trained Omaha Beach. Brad Pegram, the agent for Mike Smith, said Smith would travel to Oaklawn to ride Omaha Beach.
Lawson said he and Prat discussed the pros and cons of both colts and said it was "a tough decision" but decided to go with the colt who already had won going two turns.
Galilean worked five furlongs under Prat in 1:01.20 on Tuesday morning at Santa Anita. Jerry Hollendorfer trains Galilean.
The Rebel is worth 50 points to the winner on the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the field for the Kentucky Derby on May 4. The Rebel will be the graded stakes debut for both Galilean and Omaha Beach.
