Jones goes for grand slam of sorts in upcoming maiden race at Oaklawn

Trainer Larry Jones is going for a grand slam of sorts in the upcoming fifth race at Oaklawn. He starts Rising Star in the maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and up at a mile. The horse is the last of four Jones trainees to run back following a start on the opening day program Jan. 25 at Oaklawn.

Jones said in a Daily Racing Form interview that he did not fault any of his starters on that program after assessing the races. For more: https://classic.drf.com/news/rebel-next-southwest-winner-super-steed

Super Steed was the first to run back after finishing off the board in the Smarty Jones. He returned to action Feb. 18 and upset the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest Stakes at 62-1 at Oaklawn.

Next up was Istan Council, who ran ninth in an optional $62,500 claiming race Jan. 25 at Oaklawn. Istan Council returned on Feb. 21 and won at the same level at 23-1 at Oaklawn.

Lovely Flash was the third of Jones' four starters on Jan. 25 at Oaklawn to run back, winning a $40,000 maiden claiming race as the favorite on Feb. 22. It came one start after she was seventh in a maiden special weight Jan. 25 at Oaklawn.

Rising Star (6) is currently 6-1.
