Friday's eight-race program drew 64 runners on a day when jockeys will not carry whips for the first time in track history.
Last Friday, the Jockeys' Guild announced the one-day experiment which is similar to a proposed rule that would eliminate the use of whips in races except in cases of emergency. Under the new rule, which is months from being implemented, if at all, jockeys can carry whips.
Friday, the riders will not carry whips.
Friday's progam drew fields of 8, 6, 5, 9, 11, 9, 7 and 9.
The proposed rule was approved by the California Horse Racing Board on March 28, but the implementation process will take months to complete the regulatory process.
