A cloudy and warm day for the eight-race card of Tapeta sprints.
Front-runners won six of the 10 Tapeta tilts yesterday on opening day. Most of the races were shorter sprints, so once could argue that it wasn't a strong speed bias. A mixture of shippers and horses who wintered north of the border were successful.
The featured sixth, the $100K Star Shoot Stakes, lured nine 3yo fillies to go six furlongs (Malibu Dawn is out). The unbeaten comebacker Intanga Rose is making her first start on the road to the Woodbine Oaks, and will have a route race in between. She wintered at Gulfstream, and might not need one.
Winter-raced Sister Peacock is unbeaten going short on the Tapeta, and figures to take some catching. Two-time stakes winner My Gal Betty was scratched from a recent Keeneland stakes, and would appear to be a vulnerable favorite. Other contenders include the shippers Missmizz and Power Gal, who lacks synthetic track experience.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover is nearly $5K for the nightcap, which is scheduled to go off at 4:45 p.m.
