Beau Recall has improved sharply since leaving Southern California late last year and she won her biggest race in that time when rallying from last to first to capture the Grade 2, $400,000 Distaff Turf Mile on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Beau Recall, with Irad Ortiz Jr. up, reeled in Got Stormy in deep stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Got Stormy just held off Daddy Is a Legend by a head for second. Environs was fourth. Jose Ortiz rode both Beau Recall and Environs in their last starts and sided with Environs on Saturday. His brother was the beneficiary.
Beau Recall ($23) was timed in 1:37.12 on a course that continues to be posted as firm but is playing as though it is no better than good.
The win was the third in four starts for Beau Recall since she was sent to Fair Grounds for the winter and transferred to trainer Brad Cox. She won the New Orleans Ladies on Louisiana Derby day in her most-recent start.
Now age 5, Beau Recall has won six times in 22 starts. She is owned by Nick Cosato's Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing.
