Trainer Bob Baffert on Monday said that his three runners in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday all emerged from the race in good condition, but that as of Monday the only one of the three he was considering for the Preakness at Pimlico on May 18 was Improbable, who was officially fourth -- promoted from fifth on the disqualification of Maximum Security -- as the lukewarm 4-1 favorite.
Game Winner was officially fifth after a very wide trip, a half-length behind Improbable, and Roadster officially 15th. Game Winner is owned by Gary and Mary West, who also own Maximum Security, who was demoted from first to 17th by the stewards.
Baffert returned to his Southern California base of Santa Anita on Sunday. He said he would return to Churchill Downs -- where all three of his runners remain -- on the weekend to check on them and at that time make a final decision regarding the Preakness.
"It's too early to tell. I want to let the dust settle," Baffert said. "I should know more in a few days. Right now, Improbable is the only one I'm considering for it. But I'm not sure. It takes about a week to find out how they are."
Improbable was second to Omaha Beach in the Arkansas Derby in his race prior to the Derby.
