Santa Anita Saturday preview

Plenty of generous prices Saturday at Santa Anita, where first post is 12 noon. Preview …

Race 1 – Midweek rain softened the turf course, and the only turf route Friday was won by a closer. Is the two-turn speed bias gone? Hope so, top choice King Caymus (8) rallies from far back. The dropper is 10-1, will settle for half that in this $40k claiming N2L mile.

Race 3 – Five furlongs on turf. If front-runners G Q Covergirl (5) and Kentan Road (2) engage, this race sets up for 4-1 closer Swirling (4).

Race 5 – The last-out maiden win by Overdue (12) was more impressive than the 73 Beyer. Two turns should not be a problem in this N1X turf mile. Overdue is listed at 8-1. Another attractive gamble.

Race 6 – Posterize (9) is the “fastest” horse in this statebred maiden sprint, but Daily Racing Form “horse to watch” Play Money (8) is better than either of his first two starts indicate. He was off slowly in his debut, and he was a pace casualty second out. Play Money is listed at 6-1. Good enough.

Race 7 – This N1X filly-mare turf mile is the deepest race on the card. Peter’s Kitten (1) deserves favoritism, but Querelle (7) had no shot last time when she was blocked into and through the stretch. She is worth a stab at the right price. Will insist on higher odds than her 6-1 morning line. Need 9-1 or higher.

Preakness Stakes (3:48 PT) simulcast – Bourbon War (2), Improbable (4), Laughing Fox (11), Owendale (5).

Race 8 – Odds-on front-runner Mucho Gusto (1) could be gone in this G3 sprint for 3-year-olds, but closer Manhattan Up (5) will fly late as trainer Phil Oviedo tries to upset longtime friend Bob Baffert. High school classmates, Oviedo and Baffert have known each other for 50 years. Manhattan Up is a last-out allowance winner whose modest speed figure does not match the visual impression. Manhattan Up is listed at 6-1. Wagering strategy: win bet Manhattan Up, and exacta box with Mucho Gusto.

Race 10 – This turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares is tough. First-time starter Miss Hot Legs (2) is the choice, while firster Kiana’s Love (4) reportedly has loads of speed. They are listed at 5-1 and 8-1, respectively.

Early post Saturday, 12 noon.
