Santa Anita Sunday: off turf, “sloppy”’

Saved by a late rally. “Santa Anita preview” posted here Saturday was wrong about the Preakness, missed with early longshots at Santa Anita, then bailed out the final two races.

As for Preakness winner War of Will at $14.20, sharp handicapping by Matt Bernier, Chuck Kuehhas, Nicole Russo and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form.

Sunday at Santa Anita, all four races scheduled for turf (1, 4, 7, 9) are moved to the main track that is labelled “sloppy.” Might want to tread lightly. Sunday preview …

Race 1 – This five-furlong maiden race is moved from turf to dirt. Program favorite Moreisbetter (6) ran well in her debut on turf, worked well on dirt since. Reluctant to force an opinion on a race that will be run under different conditions than scheduled. Scratches: Bellize (1), La Shrimp (2), Noble Goddess (3), Fabiolla (4), Claudelle (9).

Race 2 – First-time starter Westport (1) has worked well and reportedly has speed. Progeny of Flashback won just 5 percent first time out, but 5-2 third choice Westport might be the exception. The two favorites blew big leads first out: top choice One Eighty (6) and Rafal (4). Good spot for a firster.

Race 3 – Fore Left (2) stands out in this 2-year-old maiden race. His :35.40 gate work May 13 was impressive (viewed on XBTV.com). Take the short price, or pass the race.

Race 4 – Second-level allowance, fillies and mares, moved from five furlongs on turf to five furlongs on dirt. Down to a four-horse field with the scratches of favorite Flammetta (3) and Love and Peace (6). Main-track only Spend Spend Spend (1) inherits favoritism.

Race 5 – Maiden-30 sprint for 3yo fillies, Gallantlystreaming (9) seems a standout but her high-percent trainer Peter Miller is in an uncharacteristic 2-for-37 funk. According to workout analyst Andy Harrington, first-time starter Second Avenue (4) has speed. Probably worth tossing in at 12-1. Scratch Harpers Gallop (1).

Race 6 – The fifth-place debut by Mighty Elijah (7) was better than it looks. Off last, finished well, galloped out in front. He showed enough ability to merit a gamble at 8-1. Program favorite Sea Journey (4) has speed, and could be gone. He finished in the money all four starts at this statebred maiden-50 level, beaten favorite last two.

Race 7 – This $50k claiming race at a mile and one-eighth is moved from turf to dirt and down to a field of five. Scratches: Prince of Arabia (2), Accountability (4), Full of Luck (7).

Race 8 – Selcourt (1) and Smiling Tigress (3) are out of this G3 filly-mare sprint, which makes Danuska’s My Girl (4) about one-to-a-hundred in a three-horse field.

Race 9 – An already impossible race, $30k N2L claiming fillies and mares, got even more difficult. It was a mile on turf, now a mile on the main track. Scratches: Blueberry Princess (2), Tappiza (6) and Trustini (10).
