Santa Anita Memorial Day preview

The rain is gone, the main track is “fast” and the turf listed “good” Monday at Santa Anita. Preview …

Race 1 – Recent rains ended the turf speed bias. Only one of the last 10 turf routes was won by the pacesetter. Miss Bigly (3) was bias-compromised last out, rallying from seventh to third in a turf route won by the pacesetter. With a prep under her belt, and a fair course, she holds the edge in this maiden turf route. Program favorite Ameerah B (4) ran well in her debut, runner-up in a sprint. She is the first of six Monday starters for John Sadler and Joel Rosario, a combo that is 17-for-37 at Santa Anita since Dec. 26.

Race 2 – Five-horse field of maiden fillies includes Bob Baffert’s only two starters on the card – fast-working firster Bowl of Soul (2) and fast-working comebacker Raneem (1).

Race 3 – Mile turf for 3-year-olds, first-level allowance. Jasikan (6) ran super finishing third with a wide trip in his U.S. debut. He ran better than Shining Through (3), who finished a neck in front of him. Swamp Souffle (2) adds blinkers and may try to steal it.

Race 4 – Not sure if top choice Hey Sequoia (6) wants two turns, not sure if program favorite Studly Perfection (1) is as sharp as last year. This mile dirt race, $16k claiming N3L, is a scramble.

Race 5 – Foxtail (8) is lone speed in this filly-mare N2X at a mile and one-eighth on turf. She should be gone at 2-1. Foxtail’s recent contribution to the Sadler-Hronis Racing operation goes beyond afternoon performance. In the morning, she was workmate for Catalina Cruiser on May 20, and Gift Box on May 11.

Race 6 – Six-horse field, Chasin Lucas (4) returns to preferred dirt footing, while Wandering Patrol (6) worked well since finishing third and being vanned off.

Race 7 – Vasilika (4), Rymska (1) and Ollie’s Candy (2) are the principals in the Grade 1 Gamely for fillies and mares at nine furlongs on turf. Enthusiasm for comebacker Ollie’s Candy is tempered after downbeat commentary from workout analyst Andy Harrington. Link to Daily Racing Form advance on the Gamely: https://bit.ly/2JHLvAm

Race 8 – Gift Box (5) will be tough in this Grade 1 mile and one-quarter race previously known as the Hollywood Gold Cup. Gift Box has speed for a pressing trip, and is working super. Vino Rosso (7) from the East and Lone Sailor (4) from the Midwest are his main threats. Link to DRF advance on the Gold Cup: https://bit.ly/2K73QWJ

Race 9 – Moisture in the course is fine for Delta Prince (8), favored to win the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile. He is proven on wet ground. Sharp Samurai (2) is training super for his comeback, and Catapult (5) remains in top form even though he lost last time at odds-on. Link to DRF advance on the Shoemaker Mile: https://bit.ly/2W6YYs6

Race 10 – Candy Cornell (4) should win this N1X sprint if he runs two alike, Adens Dream (3) could cap a big day for Sadler and Rosario, Dueling (9) will rally late.

Top plays: Miss Bigly, race 1; Jasikan, race 3.
