Kallaniki, last of six in her debut and only start last September, scored a surprise win in Monday's first race, a maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies on turf.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Kallaniki ($110.80) held off a late threat from 6-5 favorite Ameerah B to win by a head in 1:36.60. Pretty Point (16-1) finished third, a nose behind Ameerah B in a field of nine.
Kallaniki, trained by Michael McCarthy, was the second-longest shot in the field.
This could be a big day for McCarthy, who runs Ohio in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile in the ninth race.
