Preview, Saturday at Santa Anita …
Race 1 – The favorites in this maiden-50 turf mile have the same style. Boru (2) is speed, Conquest Smartee (5) stretches out from a sprint comeback. If they stay out of each other’s way, they could make it a parade on a course that seems speed-friendly again.
Race 2 – Five-horse field, minimal appeal. Tiz Toffee (4) should make the lead and be gone as trainer Andrew Lerner seeks his fourth straight first-off-the-claim win.
Race 3 – Five-horse field. Tough It Out (1) is the top choice in this starter allowance at a mile and one-eighth on turf, though he is a closer on a course that might be kind to speed.
Race 4 – Comical Ghost (4) debuts with sharp works including a five-furlong gate drill on this track. By Ghostzapper, his dam is multiple graded winner Hystericalady (11 wins, $2.3 million). As a broodmare, three of her five runners are winners, one graded win.
As for the trainer of Comical Ghost, he is okay. The past two years, Bob Baffert is 15-for-19 (79 percent) with 3-year-old first-time starters that start favored at Santa Anita.
Race 5 – Finally, a non-favorite. Juggles (6), listed at 5-1, stretches to a mile on turf after a sharp maiden win at five furlongs on turf. The likely pacesetter might be gone. Deep threats are favorite Foster Boi (8) and Golden Birthday (3). The latter improved a ton last time in his first turf route. His price is a tempting 8-1.
Race 6 – Another Baffert debut 3-year-old (see race-4 stats), Morning Snow (1) has trained like he can win first time out despite the rail.
Race 7 – Simon Callaghan trainees Maxim Rate (6) and Hostess (8) top this G3 at a mile and one-eighth on turf. Maxim Rate, the favorite, is versatile. Hostess, listed at 5-1, had legit trouble finishing fourth last out. An upset candidate at 6-1 is Over Emphasize (2), who ran well at this nine-furlong distance last time and worked well since.
Race 8 – Paradise Woods (2) is 1-to-5 in this filly-mare Grade 2. Wouldn’t bet on her, or against. Okay, maybe a one-way exacta to improving Tapped (4). For the sake of action.
Race 9 – Jaccat (9) is the horse to beat in this maiden-75 turf sprint based on her sharp runner-up comeback against next-out winner Storming Lady. However, the 6-1 first-time starter Queen of Mean (3) has trained like she is “live.”
Keys: Comical Ghost, race 4; Juggles, race 5; Jaccat and Queen of Mean, race 9.
