Maryanorginger stumbled at the start, steadied back to the rear of the field shortly thereafter but was good enough to overcome all the trouble to make her career debut a winning one in the $150,000 Astoria Stakes.
With jockey Jorge Vargas Jr. aboard, Maryanorginger dropped about eight lengths off the early pace following her eventful beginning, advanced along the inside on the turn, split rivals continuing to gain on the leaders in early stretch, edged clear inside the furlong marker then held safe the 6-5 Perfect Alibi to win by three parts of a length. Perfect Alibi appeared to be dropping out of contention racing outside rivals on the bend, re-asserted herself upon turning for home, rallying belatedly to finish second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of Take You Out of It.
Maryanorginger, a daughter of Strong Mandate, is trained by Jeremiah Englehart for Gold Square LLC. She paid $8.60 after completing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.94.
