With two defeats this year as the prohibitive favorite, it is now time to officially start wondering about Newspaperofrecord.
Newspaperofrecord controlled the pace in the just completed Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont as the 1-9 favorite, and the pace was not all that strong. And yet, Newspaperofrecord had no answer when challenged in the stretch by fellow Chad Brown trainee Cambier Parc, and Cambier Parc went right on by to score decisively.
Newspaperofrecord's Wonder Again performance was very similar to her tired second in last month's Edgewood Stakes as the 1-5 favorite in her 3-year-old debut.
Now, it is fair to question if Newspaperofrecord, who was so brilliant winning all three of her starts last year, including an electrifying score in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has made the usual form transition from 2 to 3. It's also fair to question if her big wins last year weren't possibly attributable to catching deep, yielding turf courses each time.
