As was the case in her 3-year-old debut last month at Churchill Downs, odds on favorite and defending Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf champ Newspaperofrecord surrendered an easy lead in late stretch opening the door for her stable mate Cambier Parc to win the Grade 3 Wonder Again. Kelsey's Cross finished third.
Newspaperofrecord was on cruise control setting lesiurely fractions of 23.96, 48.58 and 1:12.48 for the opening six furlongs, settled into the stretch with a clear advantage but again came up wanting in the final sixteenth. Cambier Parc raced well placed while saving ground to the stretch under Jose Ortiz, eased out for the drive and was able to run down her tiring mate to edge away to a 1 1/4 length decision. It was another four lengths back to Kelsey's Cross, who never menaced the top pair.
The win was the third in five starts for Cambier Parc, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, who captured the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride this winter at Gulfstream Park. She finished fourth, nearly three lengths behind Newspaperofrecord, in the Edgewood.
Cambier Parc is trained by Chad Brown for OXO Equine LLC. She completed a mile and one eighth over a firm course in 1:46.83 and paid $12.40 as the second choice in a field of just five 3-year-old fillies.
