While attention focuses on New York and Belmont Park, California-breds are in the spotlight Friday at Santa Anita. Five of the eight races are for statebreds. Preview …
Race 1 – Our Romance (5) made the Daily Racing Form “horses to watch” list following a tough-trip fifth last out at five furlongs. She stretches out for this statebred maiden turf mile, and at 7-2 is poised to upset program favorite Goodtingscominpink (7).
Race 2 – More than one-third (16 of 43) of dirt routes have had five runners or fewer since racing resumed March 29. This five-horse field is another. Pass or “all.”
Race 3 – Twirling Apples (3) makes her first start since October as the favorite in this $35k claiming N3L turf mile. She is the “best horse” based on class and speed, but is ready, first start in seven months? Based on commentary from National Turf workout analyst Andy Harrington, the answer is yes. Take the short price, or pass.
Race 4 – Four runners with the scratch of program favorite Duranga from this filly-mare dirt mile, $12.5k claiming starter allowance. Majestic Diva (2) should be tough. Pass.
Race 5 – Statebred allowance sprinters at five furlongs on turf, Fashionably Fast (3) is training super for his comeback. He has undergone recent changes, chronicled in the DRF race advance. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/2WuKbYf
Race 6 – Statebred maiden-50 fillies and mares. Vella (6) is the proper favorite, but 3-1 third choice Harper’s Gallop (3) and 4-1 first-time starter Chirp (4) merit consideration.
Race 7 – Statebred filly-mare maidens sprint five furlongs on turf. Scratch the also-eligibles. That leaves Flying to the Line (7) as the one to beat. She is no cinch.
Race 8 – Statebred maiden 2-year-old fillies at five furlongs. None of Your Biz (5) popped out of the gate Wednesday morning in an unrecorded drill. She is ready to fire. Program favorite Takes a Village (1) has a bullet gate drill, and Fran’s Empire (4) ran better than looked in her third-place debut.
Keys: Into Romance, race 1; Fashionably Fast, race 5; None of Your Biz, race 8.
