Homerique split horses in upper stretch and fought off stablemate Competitionofideas in the final furlong to win the Grade 2, $600,000 New York for older female grass horses on Friday at Belmont Park, giving trainer Chad Brown a one-two finish and his second stakes win on the card, following Separationofpowers in the Bed o' Roses.
Homerique ($4), the favorite, was caught behind a slow pace for much of the race but flew home through the final quarter mile, which was run in 22.64 seconds, and in which she made up several lengths, so her final quarter was in the 22-second range. She got up by a neck under Irad Ortiz Jr. Semper Sententiae was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third.
Homerique has won both her starts since arriving in this country from France, where she was a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed. She won the Grade 3 Beaugay on May 11 in her first start in seven months.
Homerique was timed in 2:00.60 for 1 1/4 miles on the firm course. She is owned by Peter Brant.
