European shippers continued their hold on the Grade 2, $400,000 Belmont Gold Cup as Amade launched a wide rally around the final turn of this two mile turf event and, despite drifting out in the stretch, outfinished Arklow, a U.S.-based horse who was the 2-1 favorite, to post a mild upset.
Highland Sky was along to be third, ahead of Canessar. Red Knight, who was also 2-1, finished fifth.
The other two European invaders for this Belmont Gold Cup, Mootasadir and Raa Atoll, tired after setting and prompting the pace, respectively.
Amade, who paid $15.20, is trained by Alessandro Botti and was ridden by Flavien Prat. He covered the two miles over a firm Widener turf course in 3:19.95.
Amade, a 5-year-old gelding by Casamento, had previously won seven of 12 career starts in France and England, none of which came against group stakes competition.
