A beautiful sunny day, with a gusting east wind, for the terrific 11-race Woodbine Oaks card. Lane 1 and firm for the turf.
The $500K Oaks is wide open. Reigning Canadian champion 2yo filly Bold Script could make amends off her flat third as the favorite in the G3 Selene, in which she had some excuses.
Trainer Mark Casse has a trio of contenders: Selene runner-up Preferred Guest, and the top two finishers from the Fury Stakes, Speedy Soul and Hastalavistababy, who should go off lower than her 8-1 morning line price.
Desert Ride, a promising turf expert from Kentucky, lacks synthetic track experience. In the synthetic era at Woodbine, since 2007, only Holy Helena (2017) won the Oaks without having raced on a synthetic surface.
The obvious protagonists in the other Queen's Plate prep on the card, the Plate Trial, are Federal Law, Dun Drum and Jammin Still. There's been plenty of buzz about Jammin Still, who's coming off a troubled second in allowance company. Stakes-placed Moon Swings, a first-time gelding, looks best among the three maidens in the field.
The unbeaten Pearl Heist and Star Shoot Stakes winner Sister Peacock head the other stakes in the card, the $100K William D. Graham Memorial.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover is $37K.
