Hog Creek Hustle led home a parade of longshots in the Grade 1, $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes. At odds of 18-1, Hog Creek Hustle and jockey Corey Lanerie rallied wide through the homestretch, holding off 17-1 shot Nitrous to win this seven-furlong dirt race for 3-year-olds. Following Nitrous was 17-1 chance Borracho as 31-1 shot Strike Silver, who set a hot pace and held gamely, finished fourth. Hog Creek Hustle paid $39.80 to win and keyed a 10-cent superfectat that returned $3,445.45.
Stewards launched an inquiry into Hog Creek Hustle's run in upper stretch, where he came in a path or two and Mind Control was forced to check, but let the result stand.
Kentucky-based Vickie Foley, with a rare New York starter, trains Hog Creek Hustle for Something Special Racing LLC. Hog Creek Hustle, by Overanalyze out of Candy Fortune, by Candy Ride, won for just the third time in nie starts and captured his first stakes race. He was coming off a solid second-place finish in the Pat Day Mile after Foley cut him back to extended one-turn races following a run through the 3-year-old dirt-route stakes series at Fair Grounds this past winter.
Winning time for the seven furlongs on a fast track was 1:21.15. Favored Honest Mischief loomed outside pace-setting Strike Silver in upper stretch but wilted late and finished sixth.
