Santa Anita Sunday preview

Short takes, Sunday at Santa Anita …

Race 1 – Untouched Elegance (1) wire to wire on the drop? At a mile on turf, she could be gone at 3-1. Willing to take a stand against program favorite Atina (9) from that post.

Race 2 – Avanti Bello (1) returns from a freshening in a mile dirt allowance. Third choice in the program, he has more speed than main rival Popular Kid (3), who underwent throat surgery since his most recent start. Mile dirt, starter allowance, will use both .

Race 3 – Filly-mare N1X at a mile and one-quarter on turf, the only 3-year-old in the field is the one to beat. Truffalino (7) can win from off the pace as 5-2 second choice.

Race 4 – Will be disappointed if odds-on Baby Gronk (4) does not win this Cal-bred maiden-50. It (disappointment) happened before. The five-start maiden lost four as the favorite. Statistical oddity: favorites won 70 percent (14 of 20) of six-furlong races the past three weeks.

Race 6 – Rafal (4) is the speed of the $75k Desert Code, the filly Ginger Nut (1) will rally late. Five remain, but it’s a two-horse race. Strictly Biz scratched.

Race 7 – Willing to back dropper Gas Can (4) in this maiden-30 sprint. He worked well since transferring to trainer Andrew Lerner. Gas Can is listed at 4-1.

Race 8 – Miss Hot Legs (4) is the most probable winner on the card in this turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares. She finished second in her debut. Her main rival is comebacker Taylor and Burton (3), working well for her comeback. She might get bet down from 6-1.

Race 9 – Into Chocolate (3) stretches out from a creditable third in a productive race. She is 3-1. Sunny Dale (4), listed at 5-1, is worth a look on the switch to dirt. Will pass on program favorite Loving Moment (8).

First post, 1 p.m.
