Rally-wide closers held the advantage Saturday at Los Alamitos; the one-day profile is worth consideration for the modest Sunday card. Most races have six starters or fewer. Preview …
Race 1 – Both five-furlong races Saturday were won from off the pace; top choice Way Gone (3) and Johann’s Command are speed in this $6,250 restricted claiming race at 5f. The race could set up for Seattle Encounter (5).
Race 2 – Popular Appeal (5) showed speed and faded first out; she drops in for a $50,000 claim tag as the one to beat. However, first-time starter Expensive Devon (6) has trained like she is well-meant.
Race 3 – Fashionably Fast (3) ran super in his comeback prep, he should reel in front-running favorite Tough But Nice (2) in this Calbred N1X.
Race 4 – Rizzi’s Honor (4) on the lead, or Party Hostess (5) from behind? Coin flip.
Race 5 – Well-regarded 2-year-old Schrodinger (5) debuts with a series of flashy works for Simon Callaghan. Purchased for $550k at a 2yo sale, his odds are likely to drop below his 9-5 program price. If he runs like he trains, Schrodinger will be tough to beat.
Race 6 – Top choice An Ocala Ten (1) is inside speed in this five and a half-furlong sprint. If the track plays like Saturday, he could be up against it. This might be a spread race, including Soul Owner (4), Mason Dixon (5) and Seahawk Wave (6).
Race 7 – Chasing Moments (4) stretches out, Solarium (7) returns from a long layoff. This maiden-20 route is a mess. Perhaps it is a good spot to take a flyer on 12-1 longshot Wilhelmina’s Girl (6), who is bred to route, and stretches out for her third start. Trainer Hector Palma has won with four of his last 15 maiden-claiming dirt stretch-outs.
Race 8 – Calexman (3) should win this five-runner open allowance sprint, though 2-1 is no bargain.
Race 9 – La Purissima (3) was vanned off in March at Santa Anita, she worked well for her comeback in this maiden-20.
Low-odds keys: Fashionably Fast, race 3; Schrodinger, race 5; La Purissima, race 9. Higher-odds speculations: Expensive Devon, race 2; Wilhelmina’s Girl, race 7.
