A broken water pipe on the inner turf course has prompted racing officials to put up a makeshift, half-moon shaped rail on the outside part of the inner turf course, about 30 yards from the wire. While awkward looking, it is not expected to have an impact on the three races scheduled for that course on today’s card including the opener.
The three races scheduled for the inner turf have fields of five, six and nine. There are 49-feet between the outside of the makeshift rail and the temporary rail which is out 35-feet from the inside.
Jockey Javier Castellano walked the course and flashed two thumbs up to the stewards.
Castellano said he was told by Glen Kozak, director of track surfaces, that he wanted to keep horses off that part of the course because it’s wet and potentially soft.
“We have room, I think we’ll be okay,” Castellano told Daily Racing Form.
Saturday's two big races -- the $1 million Belmont Derby and the $750,000 Belmont Oaks are scheduled for the inner turf course. However, there will be no inside rails for those two races.
