The massive "Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer" tournament is taking place today in the north-west parking lot at Woodbine. Spotty showers are in the forecast on this warm day.
There are two G3 Tapeta stakes going 1 1/18 miles on the 11-race card, most notably the G3 Ontario Derby.
Avie's Flatter, who placed in all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown, is the 5-2 second choice in the derby. It doesn't contain a regular front-runner, and he could prompt the pace under Eurico Da Silva, going a distance which might be his preferred. Global Access, a G3 stakes winner on turf and Tapeta, is 2-1 on the line. Both are contenders for Canadian champion male 3yo honors. Upstart Jungle Fighter could be the spoiler in his stakes debut.
The G3 Durham Cup lured a light five-horse field. Stretch-runner Special Forces, the 2-1 favorite, probably won't have much pace to chase, and Thor's Rocket could be the main beneficiary of the projected slow tempo. Aheadbyacentury is taking the blinkers off, and should be competitive at a square price.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover is $25K.
