Eight Rings earned an 87 Beyer Figure winning the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes by six lengths Friday at Santa Anita, a mile and one sixteenth in 1:45.41 over a surface that produced slow times. Fast early, slow late (:47.06 half, 1:11.71 six furlongs), front-runner Eight Rings reemerged as the local favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Bast earned an 81 Beyer winning the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes for fillies by a neck over Comical in 1:46.10. The slow time was partly a product of the slow pace (:49.54 half, 1:13.98 six furlongs). For what it’s worth, the final five-sixteenths of the Chandelier was :32.12, compared to :33.70 in the American Pharoah.
Pee Wee Reese earned a 99 Beyer winning the G2 Eddie D. Stakes for turf sprinters by a half-length over tough-trip runner-up Eddie Haskell. The final time for the five-furlong turf race was :55.33. Owner-breeder Nick Alexander will consider supplementing Pee Wee Reese to the BC Turf Sprint for $100,000. Runner-up Eddie Haskell is BC eligible, and a probable starter in the Turf Sprint.
