Paradise Woods ($9.60) caught pacesetter Secret Spice in the final sixteenth to win her second Grade 2 stakes of the year in Sunday's $200,000 Zenyatta Stakes for fillies and mares.
The win gave Paradise Woods an automatic-berth to the Breeders' Cup Distaff here on Nov. 2.
Ridden for the first time by Abel Cedillo, Paradise Woods ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:44.31. Secret Spice set early fractions of 23.14 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.83 for a half-mile. Paradise Woods was always near the front and engaged the leader in early stretch. Paradise Woods won by 1 3-4 lengths.
Ollie's Candy was third on the turn and held that position, finishing two lengths behind Paradise Woods.
La Force finished fourth, followed by Mongolian Humor and Kaydetre.
Trained by John Shirreffs, Paradise Woods won the Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes here in April and was later second to La Force in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes in June and fourth to Ollie's Candy in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar in February.
Paradise Woods was third in the 2017 BC Distaff at Del Mar as a 3-year-old.
