Apprentice jockey Jorge Velez won the second through fourth races on Saturday to record his first hat trick at SAnta Anita, and take the lead in the jockey standings.
Through the fourth race, Velez has nine wins at the autumn meeting, one more than Abel Cedillo.
Velez won the second race with Top of the Game ($5.20), the third with Go for a Ride ($5.40) and the fourth with Claudelle ($2.80). All were favored. The 50-cent pick 3 combining those winners paid just $5.85.
Velez goes for a four-timer on Drama for Mama (10) in the fifth race.
This was the third time Velez has won at least three races this year, his first full season of riding. He won three races at Golden GAte Fields on April 28 and four at Los Alamitos on Sept. 22.
