Hindsight is 20-20 and so was the win payoff on Spun to Run ($20.20), an improving Parx-based 3-year-old with the highest Beyer Figure in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Saturday at Santa Anita.
Spun to Run, who earned a 110 Beyer last month winning an ungraded stakes at Parx, was hustled to the front by jockey Irad Ortiz and led gate to wire to win by two and three-quarter lengths over troubled Omaha Beach. Blue Chipper, a shipper from Korea, finished another length and one-quarter back in third.
After the top three, the order of finish was: Snapper Sinclair, Improbable, Coal Front, Mr. Money, Diamond Oops, Ambassadorial and Giant Expectations.
Spun to Run’s trainer is Juan Guerrero, the Hard Spun colt’s owner is Robert Donaldson. Spun to Run, winner of the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes this fall, has now won five of 11 starts.
Even-money favorite Omaha Beach lost position early, raced midfield, uncorked a solid move into the stretch, but never threatened. He actually ran well in defeat. The time for the mile dirt race was 1:36.58.
