West Approach (the 11-4 joint favorite) won for the firsr time since December 2017 in a Grade 3 handicap chase at 3 7-16ths miles at Cheltenham. Closing from last in a field of seven, West Approach took the lead after the final fence and won by three lengths over 10-1 Achille, who set the pace.
The win launched discussions about whether West Approach would start in the valuable Ladbrokes Trophy, the leading handicap chase of November in England. The race will be run at Newbury Racecourse on Nov. 30.
Trainer Colin Tizzard said that quick turnaround may be asking too much of the 9-year-old gelding, who was ridden by on Saturday by Robbie Power.
West Approach had lost 13 races prior to Saturday's win, but two of those losses were second-place finishes to top three-mile hurdler Paisley Park last December and January. West Approach has won 3 of 13 starts in chases and 5 of 32 starts in all jump races.
