Justinian, who trainer Bob Baffert has described as one of the larger horses he has trained, won an allowance race with a $50,000 claiming option at a mile by five lengths in Sunday's seventh race, the 3-year-old colt's second start around two turns.
Justinian was sixth of seven in a similar race at Del Mar on Nov. 30 after stumbling at the start. He handled the quick turnaround without difficulty. Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Justinian was fifth on the backstretch while racing wide. he continued wide around the turn and took the lead in the final furlong before pulling clear.
Owned by Ward and Roberta Williford and Chuck Winner, Justinian is by Justin Philip and was purchased for $275,000 at a 2-year-olds in-training in 2018. Justinian has won 2 of 5 starts.
Baffert has won seven races this weekend. He won a personal-best five Thoroughbred races on Saturday's program and had two wins from three starters on Sunday.
