Bob Baffert dominated week one of the two-week winter meet at Los Alamitos, winning seven races from only 13 starters including an extraordinary career debut by a 2-year-old colt that should make some noise this winter. Short review, opening week …
First-time starter Azul Coast overcame lack of seasoning and an impossible trip Sunday to win a one-mile maiden race (LRC, Dec. 8, race 3) by four lengths. He was floated five-wide on the first turn, stayed five-wide throughout, rallied six-wide into the lane, and won going away in 1:38.59. Impressive.
It is worth noting that Azul Coast is by terrific wet-track sire Super Saver, therefore he probably moved up on the “good” surface. Also, the outside lanes were best. Finally, Azul Coast faced a modest field. But his open-length, wide-trip victory suggests Azul Coast might be an important 3-year-old in 2020. He earned a 75 Beyer, which does not account for ground loss.
* Drayden Van Dyke rode Azul Coast; Van Dyke and Baffert went 5 of 6 opening week. Van Dyke’s five wins opening week leads all riders; Baffert’s seven wins leads all trainers.
* Since daytime racing resumed at Los Alamitos in 2014, Baffert is 89 for 274 (32.1 percent). On Sunday, Baffert won the G1 Starlet with Bast and Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity with Thousand Words. Baffert has won 17 of the 28 graded stakes at Los Alamitos since 2014.
* Favorites won eight of 26 races opening week (31 percent), all but four races were contested on a wet, sealed surface. Average field size was 6.92.
* Racing resumes Thursday, first post 1 p.m. Baffert’s only weekday runner is longshot first-time starter Megameister in the second race.
