A team workout Friday was way too slow for Warren’s Showtime and Club Aspen, which is why trainer Craig Lewis wheeled them back on Monday, just three days later, to work again for $200,000 stakes races Saturday at Santa Anita. Monday went a lot better.
Warren’s Showtime and Club Aspen, whose Friday work was recorded in :51.00 (they worked farther than a half-mile according to Lewis), worked five furlongs Monday. The filly Warren’s Showtime went in 1:00.80; the colt Club Aspen went in 1:01.20. They worked separately, and are expected to be among the favorites Saturday in Cal-bred stakes at Santa Anita.
Club Aspen, winner of the King Glorious Stakes last out at Los Alamitos, will run in the California Cup Derby. Warren’s Showtime, winner of the Surfer Girl Stakes in fall and scratched from the Soviet Problem Stakes last month after getting sick, runs in the California Cup Oaks. Club Aspen and Warren’s Showtime are the leading progeny sired by emerging California stallion Clubhouse Ride. The Derby and Oaks are among five Cal-bred stakes on Saturday. The races will be drawn Wednesday.
