Plenty of overlay possibilities Saturday at Santa Anita. Preview …
Race 1 – Jet Set Ruler (7) is a deserving favorite after a fast-closing second last out, but he faces another murky pace scenario. This Cal-bred N1X turf route is void of speed. Will consider longshot Blue Skye Jade (6) on the pace angle, Uncontainable (1) on the first-off-the-claim-bred-for-turf angle.
Race 2 – The problem with Takethediamondlane (3) and Adorably Sweet (4) in this Cal-bred N1X sprint is neither favorite is particularly “fast.” Top Beyer: 67. Pass.
Race 3 – Just Grazed Me (1) enters this $150k stakes for filly-mare turf sprinters as most probable winner on the card. Multiple stakes winner, class of the field, top figures. Will be surprised if she gets beat. Front-runner Stealthediamonds (3) is worth consideration. After all, a front-runner finally won a turf sprint on Friday, first time this meet.
Race 4 – Will gamble second-time starter Jungle Boy (5) is better than his seventh-place debut. He appeared to be merely prepping, worth a shot at 8-1 in the program.
Race 5 – Small field, but good field of sprinters in this $150k stakes race. The top three evenly matched contenders are Baja Sur (1), Fashionably Fast (2) and Lieutenant Dan (6). Will use all three equally.
Race 6 – Is this $200k turf stakes the final hurrah for Ashleyluvssugar (8)? The veteran 9-year-old won this race in 2017, but he has lost a step and also lost 14 straight. Make no mistake: he figures as a contender. So do The Hunted (4) and Ward ’n Jerry (1), sharp geldings in peak current form. Wound Tight (5) could be loose on the lead. Will use all four equally.
Race 7 – Club Aspen (5) is solid in this $200k dirt stakes for Cal-bred 3-year-olds, while Northern California-based program favorite Bettor Trip Nick (1) is up against it on pace and surface uncertainty. The more one views the Gold Rush Stakes win by Bettor Trip Nick, the less impressive it looks. He does not figure for another loose-on-the-lead trip.
Looking for a bomb? How about Dapper (2) at 20-1? His connections always believed he wants to route; he was compromised by the race shape last out finishing fourth in his first route. That race was dominated by speed. There is plenty of pace in this field, Dapper will be outrun early and rally late. He might be the most intriguing longshot on the card. Club Aspen the one to beat, but Dapper the one to bet at a price.
Race 8 – Impossible race. Three-year-old fillies at a mile on turf for a $200k purse. Warren’s Showtime (5) is the reluctant choice, she missed time when she got sick and missed a start in December. This race is a “deep spread,” anything goes.
Race 9 – Loafers Boy (2) and Tigre Di Slugo (1) are logical choices in this N1X Cal-bred sprint, but sharp claiming gelding Short of Ez (6) ran super three weeks ago and is not outclassed moving up from $10k claiming. Expect that Short of Ez will get hammered from his 15-1 morning line. He is fast enough to upset.
Most probable winner – Just Grazed Me, race 3. Most vulnerable program favorite – Bettor Trip Nick, race 7. Value plays – Jungle Boy, race 4; Short of Ez, race 9. Bombs away longshot – Dapper, race 7.
