Sam Houston Race Park on Sunday took entries for its Houston Racing Festival, a program of six stakes led by the Grade 3, $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic, the Grade 3, $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup and the $200,000 Texas Turf Mile. The stakes will be run next Sunday, with first post 1:20 p.m. Central.
The Houston Ladies Classic drew six fillies and mares, including Kentucky Oaks winenr Serengeti Empress, who will break from the rail under Flavien Prat. The complete field from the rail: Serengeti Empress, Out For a Spin, Saracosa, Lady Apple, Mylady Curlin, Street Band. The race will be run on the main track and goes as the eighth on a 10-race card next Sunday.
Billy Batts, runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, and Chimney Rock, runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, make their 3-year-old debuts in the Texas Turf Mile, a new race being introduced this meet. The one-mile turf stakes is for 3-year-olds and it also drew Pixelate, winner of last month's $100,000 Central Park at Aqueduct.
The Connally, over a mile and a half on the grass, drew a field of 12 including four from the barn of trainer Mike Maker: Cross Border, Patriot Drive and Marzo and Bemma's Boy. Maker has won multiple runnings of the Connally.
