Lone Sailor, at 4-5, fought off Bruder Bob through the stretch to win his 5-year-old debut Friday at Oaklawn Park. The win came in an optional $50,000 claiming race over a mile and a sixteenth and the winner covered the distance on a track upgraded to fast in 1:44.90. Joe Talamo was aboard for G M B Racing and trainer Tom Amoss.
Lone Sailor ($3.80) let the pace go as Forty Under came away with the lead and took the field through fractions of 23.40 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.22 for the half-mile and 1:12.66 for six furlongs. Lone Sailor began picking off rivals nearing the half-mile pole, advanced four wide around the turn and fought off a stubborn Bruder Bob for the final eighth of a mile.
Lone Sailor became the second horse to exit the Tenacious at Fair Grounds and win back at Oaklawn in the last week, with Pioneer Spiriit taking the Fifth Season here Saturday.
